An Awareness Level Small Animal Emergency Sheltering Class, sponsored by the Florida State Animal Response Coalition, will be held right here at the AWL Shelter on March 24. This class is the foundation course required to assist with caring for sheltered animals during a disaster.
The March 24 class, usually a $50 class, is FREE. If you’re interested, you need to sign up soon, as the class is expected to fill up quickly.
Participation in the program does not obligate you to volunteer if a disaster occurs. There are many reasons a responder may not be available, such as family or work obligations at the time of the request. For this reason it is important that the coalition continue to increase their trained volunteer membership in order to meet the demands during a true emergency.
You do not have to commit any set amount of time, travel, or money to carry out these duties. It is all volunteer. The only organizational expense you will have is the purchase of the group T-Shirt ($15). It’s like wearing a uniform at the “disaster” scene.
Course topics include Personal Preparedness, Overview of the Incident Command System, Deployment Preparedness, Assisting in Shelter Set Up, Daily Care and Feeding, Proper Cage Cleaning and Disinfection, Animal Behavior, Stress Management, Zoonotic Disease, Personal Safety, and more.
Special thanks to Peace River Dog Fanciers Member Marty Allen for helping in bringing this class to the AWL, free of charge.
