The Animal Welfare League's shelter takes in more than 5,000 animals per year. That averages out to well over 400 local domestic pets who suffer undeserved cruelty, injury, or discarding at the hands of the humans they trust each month. That is a staggering statistic.
Unfortunately, as the population of our county grows, the problem of orphaned animals grows too. All animal lovers are sickened and horrified by reports about animal abuse, neglect, and abandonment. The AWL shelter on Drance Street in Port Charlotte is our county's emergency refuge for any and all animals who arrive at its doorstep.
Regardless of the animals' injury, illness, or physical distress, the shelter staff treat all with respect and sincere concern as they evaluate their conditions, provide treatment, feed, and provide a safe kenneled area for them.
Many arriving animals have been traumatized by their prior life and need to learn to trust humans. The shelter's staff and volunteers hug, brush, and socialize the orphaned residents. Dogs are cuddled and exercised, cats are snuggled and petted, and the hope is always high that each animal will be discovered by an adoptive family who understands the importance of loving our animal partners on this planet.
Because the AWL is a nonprofit organization, its funding is not derived from tax revenues or county funding. The League exists solely due to the generous contributions of patrons like you.
As guardians of the public's trust and monetary support, the AWL administration and board of directors is attentive to the fact that they must constantly look to the future in order to ensure the ongoing rescue of animals and functioning of the shelter. The League is proud to note that again and again, the people of Charlotte County have opened their hearts to the plight of the shelter's animals and have contributed generously to fund raisers and projects.
The support and donations of the residents of our county are the life line of AWL's current work and its future. Through a planned gift, you will guarantee that the work of rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption placement for our wonderful orphaned pets will continue.
There are many options for planned giving which can help the displaced animals of Charlotte County. Your support with monetary contributions or sponsorships can be made in memory of or in honor of a pet or person.
An additional possibility for making a donation would be to designate the Animal Welfare League as a beneficiary in your will. A bequest to AWL will assure the enduring gift of comfort and care for local abused and abandoned animals. Please consider including the work of the Animal Welfare League in your will.
It is important to explore your options to guarantee that both you and the animals receive the full benefit of any considered gift. For those who wish to remember the Animal Welfare League in their wills, the following form is recommended:
